There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall wagering is not permitted. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively small location in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent location, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal capital acquired from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; still, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 1700, and although visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are methods around this, as is true of many borders.

The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge gambling den, features 150 one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety six table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the normal table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive vacation and hotel compound that highlights a number of conveniences in addition to the casino, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 table games.
